1, 4 Design principles
Every design can't be done just using design elements, it can be done by combining design elements and ideas called "Principle of design".
Principle of design is the key to understand the core of visual design to create.
1, Balance
Balanced design can provide comfortable view for viewers. Balanced (stable) design can create stable image in th design and it can lead stable goal for the design and become clear to focus or understand what the design trying to express.
There are two different types of balance principles, symmetrical and ansymmetrical.
・Symmetrical : Every visual element or most of visual elements are symetrical. It can be separated into two group, the linear symmetrical which can separate the design totally equal by half (the line to cut the image can be horizontal or vertical).
The another one is point symmetrical, every visual elements in the design has equal distance from central point.
Usually, symmetrically balanced designs can provide ordered and formal impression.
This design arrangement is widely used in the traditional design.
・Assymetrical : This is bit tricky, this is because the visual elements in the design isn't "equal" which means that the design can't be half when the design is divided by half, or doesn't have same distance from central points.
How can they form balanced images then? Assymetricaly balanced design is formed by two important elements. dominant element and lesser focal points on the other side.
To understand about asymetrical balance, you must understand that balance doesn't mean that placing same object on both side.
(Fig 1.1 The Great Wave off Kanagawa By Hokusai Katsusika)
<iframe src="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1CBrleP0vJAPGVVJPSz5nqPS6RZ6kzc5v/preview" width="640" height="480" allow="autoplay"></iframe>
This is a good example to explain about asymmetrical balance. This one of the famous Ukiyoe which is Japanese art developed during time period called Edo era from 1603 to 1868. The name is called "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" made by Katsushika Hokusai.
As you can see, this Ukiyoe is formed by big wave, small mount Fuji and tiny boat.
We can surely say that it's not balanced at all, however, we are still able to say that this Ukiyoe is balanced -which means that visual weight is equaly spread in this ukiyoe- How we can define that? To understand this, we must remember that asssyetrical image can be made by less focal point and one dominant element . If the image is formed by one core element that attracts view's attention, it can surely state as "balanced". This Ukiyoe has main imag of big wave and there is no other things that attracts viewer's attention, therefore this Ukiyoe is perfectly "balanced".
To sum up the ideas, the design principle "balanced" has two different type, either symmetrical and asymmetrical. Symmetrically balanced images places same visual emelents in both sides of images or same distance fro the center. Asymmetrically balanced images use one strongly attractive image to make viewers to focus one visual elements in the design.
2, Emphasis
This method is close to the contrast, because this art principle is creating dominance which can alter to say as section where viewers look at most in the design and the contains most visual weight. To explain more about emphasis, emphasis is the design principle that tries to attract viewer's attention by using unique visual elements such as shapes or colours.
It may seem similar to the contrast, howwever, there are clear difference between emphasis and contrast.
First of all, contrast is design principle that uses opposite visual elements to create strong impression, on the other hand, Emphasis is the design principle that uses unique visual elements to create dominance (strong influence) in the design.
3, Repetition
First of all, what does "Repetition" mean? Basically, the word of "Repetition" means "the action of repeating something that has already been said or written", in the world of design, repetition means that placing same images over and over again.
How does Repetition work for design principle? There can be two different impression from Retition design principle.
Firstly, "Repetition could make a work of design seem active", this can be more understandable by altering to say "More is more", rather than using only one images, there can be more strong impression can be made from many same images.
There can be more strong impressions can be made if the images are facing towards same direction, perhaps the impression called "active" can be made.

Secondaly "Repetition of visual elements can create rythm and pattern", to emplain more about this, if you place same visual design many times and they are forming clear line either vertically or Holizontally, the impression of "order" can be made. How the impression of "order" can help us for design development? The ordered vidual design elements can create "pattern" which is "repeating decorative design". Repeating design can help us to create some particular unity and rythm which provide us well organized visual information and impression of "tidiness" and "clean", these are very useful to make easy to see the design.
As I have explained so far, the visual principle "Repetation" can provide us unity for images.
4, Movement
How can the movement represent in the static design? Actually, it's a piece of cake,
Use the visual element's fundamental idea, line. The visual elements "line" have specific function we should understand. Our brain tends to follow the contunuous lines. We naturally see this visual principle in the comic, the line is called "Effect line". Many comic uses effect lines t o represent the movement of tany objects. Basically to explain, the movement or motion in a visual image can occur, how do we represent movement? We use shapes, forms, lines, and curves.
Even though some sort of group of the visual element can be turned into moving images by wisely used visual representation.
(Fig 1.3 Starry night by Van Gogh)

This is the famous Van Gogh's famous artwork, starry night, This painting has full of movement representation. You can see that there are many short line with blue colours, evec though there are only group of lines, Van Gogh used lives to change its own colour, direction and length generally to represent them as moving through the sky. We could represent movement more efficiently if we chenges its colours, size and sirection slowly. Without changing, the visual elements become dull/
To sum up the main ideas, we can represent movement by using group of fundamental visual elements facing towards same direction with changing its own colours and thickness slowly.
2, My own Artworks
(Fig 1.4 "Emohasis")

First, I chose Design principle "Emphasis" for my artwork. I tried to represent main characteristic of "Emphasis" (which is basically giving string impression provided by unique visual element such as different colours shapes, forms and so on...) by making yellow coloured person reading book among the people who using mobile photo to provide strong message about reading is good thing.
(Fig 1.5 Motorbike racing)

Secondaly, I tried to use design principle "Movement". I used the design theory that our eyes tend to follow the path of the lines which is widely used in the comics.
I drew motorbike racing by drawing motorbikes by forming short lines and draging lines from motorbikes to opposite side, however I also added numbers of lines in the background to represent really fast speed.
3, Feedback
When I showed my work on the last Monday, I've got these two feedback to improve my works.
Movement : To give more impression of the speed, there should be more space, Remove one bike.
Rmphasis : The impression of the difference is much weak. Increase the size of the silhouette to provide much strong impressions.
4, Reflection
Movement : This is my second image trying to represent fast Movement using short lines moving rapidly both from motorbike and background of motorbike itself.
The point where I change my work is the number of motorbikes. In the previous artwork, there were two motorbikes in the front of picture, so the lines representing the fast movement tend to be shorter than expect, therefore, the impression of the speed was weaker than how I expected.
I removed one motorbike and draw again as one bike driving fast. I hpe the impression of fast speed improved so much.

Emphasis : The lecturer advice was increasing the size of silhoutte of a person reading a book, however, I increased its size by adding orange thick outline.
This is because when I look at the border between blue background and yellow silhouette, I found that the boarder seems blinking, therefore I used orange borderline to reduce its blinking effect and providing more attention for viewers.
