This is the E portfolio about VSP's final project "30 second stop motion / 60 second visual effect video". We're going to make a either 30 second of stop motion video or 60 second visual effect video based on a given theme. I chose "30 second stop motion" for my final project.
First of all, I put my YouTube stopmotion movies playlist in this blog.
2, Planning
I was oiginally creating a video about Pearl Harbor and I already made a storyboard for that, but when I showed it to the professor, he told me that I should change the story then I decided to create a video about video game "Strikers 1945 2" which is my favourite video game.
3, Production
WORKING TITLE:
Strikers 1945
STOP MOTION/ VISUAL EFFECTS:
Stop Motion (Paper clip)
SYNOPSIS (ONE PARAGRAPH ONLY):
The movie itself is going to be based on the game called strikers 1945 Ⅱ released from Psikyo in 1997. To explain more about detail, the movie is going to be the game’s stage where player’s fighter fight against Graf Zeppelin, The plane “Focke-Wulf Ta 152” fight through the battleships and submarines, then the fighter reaches to the Graf Zeppelin, after several time, the Graf Zeppelin transforms into giant robot and destroyed.

(The main enemy’s movement is going to be my imagination because references for the robotic movement can’t be found by me.)
Story beat breakdown:
This movie’s time setting is going to be around daytime.
Act 1 : The story itself starts from brief introduction about game itself on the table with many books, then the screen swap into the scene where Focke-Wulf Ta 152 is about taking off to destroy aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin, In the back of the scene where Focke-Wulf Ta 152 takes off, the morse code signal about Graf Zeppelin is playing.
(--. .-. .- ..-. / --.. . .--. .--. . .-.. .. -.)
Act 2 : The scene then moved to the scene where the Focke Wulf is fighting against the other fighters, battleship and submarine as in the original video game, however, unlike the original video game, the camera itself dramatically changes to represent dynamic battle of fight Focke Wulf. The scene changes into the scene where Focke Wulf finally meets Graf Zeppelin. The battle itself is represented as previous scenes in Act 2. The camera angle is changing to represent fast movement during the fight. The scene where the fight between Graf Zeppelin and Focke Wulf is based on the image in which Focke Wulf is flying around Graf Zeppelin.
After Graf Zeppelin takes several damage, it transforms into a huge robot, then it fires at Focke Wulf. The time of the scene where Focke Wulf and Graf Zeppelin takes the longest time for the movie because this is the peak for the movie, however, second transformation of Graf Zeppelin is going to be removed, this is because taking whole Graf Zeppelin transformation is going to be too long.
Act 3 : After Focke Wulf takes huge damage, The support airfighters arrive and the robotic Graf Zeppelin is finally destroyed, then Focke Wulf and other airplanes (fighters) leave the scene and the movie ends. In the back of the scene, the morse code signal is playing again. (. -. . -- -.-- / -.. . ... - .-. --- -.-- . -..)
Shotlist:
Sc 1 Sh 1 : Low angled Extreme wide shot of bridge of aircraft carrier being darker by backlight.
Sc 1 Sh 2 : The screen fades into the scene about a eye-angled Medium shot of the cockpit (pilot is shown as silhouette), during this scene, the sound of morse code signal about Graf Zeppelin (--. .-. .- ..-. / --.. . .--. .--. . .-.. .. -.) starts playing.
Sc 1 Sh 3 : Wide shot of Focke-Wulf Ta 152 (eye-angle) is leaving the aircraft carrier. (morse code signal about Graf Zeppelin (--. .-. .- ..-. / --.. . .--. .--. . .-.. .. -.) is still playing.)
Sc 1 Sh 4 : Extra wide shot (High angle?) of Focke-Wulf Ta 152 left aircraft carrier and it gets smaller as it goes far away. (morse code signal about Graf Zeppelin (--. .-. .- ..-. / --.. . .--. .--. . .-.. .. -.) is still playing.).
Sc 2 Sh 5 : The fight between Focke-Wulf Ta 152 and enemy’s fleet has begun, the scene itself starts as a normal gameplay scene, then the camera is getting closer to the Focke-Wulf Ta 152 and taking back of Focke-Wulf Ta 152.
↓
Sc 2 Sh 6 : The camera is back of the fighter above as the diagram shows, the fighter plane is shooting the enemy and the enemy jets explodes.
Sc 2 Sh 7 : The fighter plane passing next to it explodes quickly. The camera itself is eye level and medium shot for the plane to take the side of the plane.
Sc 2 Sh 8 : The camera is a bit low angle and extreme wide shot to take a battleship now, the fighter plane is passing above the battleship and after the fighter plane is gone, te battleship explodes.
Sc 3 Sh 9 : The fighter plane itself is finally achieved to the Aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin, and battle starts. As I mentioned earlier, the fighter plane is flying around Graf Zeppelin during the fight, the camera is Wide shot and high angle to make a contrast with Graf Zeppelin.
Sc 3 Sh 10 : After the fight between Graf Zeppelin and fighter plane, the Graf Zeppelin suddenly transforms into a giant robot, The camera is low angled and takes it closer to express the size.
Sc 3 Sh 11 & 12 : The attack of the robot Graf Zeppelin gets harder and harder, the fighter’s plane is trying to avoid the attacks of Graf Zeppelin. This scene is going to be separated into two different scenes.
1 : The giant robot of Graf Zeppelin and support air fighters fire at the fighter plane.
2 : The fighter plane is avoiding the attack and fire at the Graf Zeppelin and enemy fighters. The enemy fighters are destroyed. (During this scene, the camera is an eye level medium shot for the plane.)
Sc 4 Sh 13 : The camera is now extremely wide shot and a bit low angle to show the supporting fighters coming to help Focke Wulf (or Shinden) and they fire at Graf Zeppelin.
The image reference is like the screenshot of the game shown below.
Sc 4 Sh 14 : The robot Graf Zeppelin is now finally destroyed. The camera angle is higher to take the explosion scene above the robot Graf Zeppelin to represent the original game scene in a different way.
Sc 4 Sh 15 : The fighters are now going back to the bases, the camera angle is high angle and changes to the eye level. The planes are going further from the camera so it gets smaller and smaller on the screen. During this scene, the morse code signal is playing. The morse code signal is “. -. . -- -.-- / -.. . ... - .-. --- -.-- . -..” (Enemy destroy

Way to product
Due to production issues, I'm going to use multiple software to edit my video.
1, First, I design flat illustrations of fighters to take and make stop motion animation.
2, Use adobe premier to make stop motion animation with greenback screen to take fighter's flying scenes.
3, Take a scene of a boat on my bed, luckily, my bed is blue, therefore it can easily represent the sea.
4, Use adobe premiere again to make animations of battleships and submarines.
5, Combine both animations from process 2 and 4 to make one animation.
6, Use adobe premiere to insert audio data into the movie made in process 5.
It can be said that my production is a combination of adobe premiere, adobe audition and my mobile stop motion app.
Things to do
1. Create objects to take in the green background scene on paper I bought yesterday.
2. Print out Green background I made in photoshop.
3. Take a stop motion scene by mobile app.
4. Combine the two different animations so the fighter looks frying.
5. Add sound effects and if I have time, I am going to add voice too.
Process
First of all, Scene 1’s shoot 1 is going to use the photograph, it takes too long time to make a copy from the image, perhaps it may be a good idea to get a photograph of the bridge of the aircraft carrier then copy it by hand drawing.
The process of drawing was based online to research references and create a model for video, then I took a scene for each frame to make a stopmotion video in green background.
After taking all stopmotions, import all of the required stop motion movies into Adobe premiere. All of stopmotion’s green background is removed and merged with a different background. I also add explosion video as effect and free BGM and sound effect to make the screen much more dramatic.
Final outcome
(Original version)
(Fixed version to make 30 seconds)
4, Summary
To sum up the conclusion first, my final stop motion project failed. I had no time to edit and create my video so the quality of my work isn’t the one I can show in the class proudly. The stopmotion is too bright so the plane looks white or light grey(This is because the object colour is similar to the background to remove. The green background was also bad because the shadow in the stop motion video makes the final outcome much darker.), and the border is too rough so the work is like a kindergarten or primary school student's scribble.
I should spend a much longer time or better method to create much better quality.
