Today, I was learnt about the angle and the way to flow camera, The talk was about mainly focused on about the distance between camera and object. Unlike the real life we normallly spend, the scene we take on camera become 2 dimentional, which means we must take each scenes with thinking about the position and angle for each object. Depends on distance or angle between object and camera, we can provide different impression.
2, Angles and shot
1, Shot types
To start with shot there are mainly 6 different shot exists and they have different role for video recording.
1,Extreme close-shot : Showing wide view to express wide location (landscape)
2,Close-up shot : Focus on one object to express the key elements in the movie.
3,Medium shot : Character cut off across the legs above.
It's used to show physicall setting
(location of the scene taken)
4,Medium wide shot : Expressing gesture and expression (character's action)
5,Wide shot : Used for showing current surroundings (environment)
6,Extreme wide shot : Showing wide view to express wide location (landscape)
As the explanation above briefly explains, each different types of shot have different rle to take, mainly closer shot is used for emphasising one visual element, on the other hand wide shot is mainly used for showing current environment around the main characters in the scene.
In the types of shot, there is one special shot called "Over the shoulder shot", which is taken from behind the shoulder of another person. In my opinion, this shot type can be used for showing relation or feeling dramatic scene.
2. Angles
The visual element in the movie can't just be taken from only frot of visual element, we need to use visual ideas efficiently to make different visual impression. Composition and different height is two features that we have learnt about the angle for video to take scenes.
1, Composition
This is the fundamental idea to take scene in the video. Basically it takes key visual elements in the scene in 45 degreess to the camera. It takes both of front and side of the face.
It's the one of the fundamental angle for video recording because it uses the basic design idea to make the balance in the screen by using unsymmetrical balance. To explain it more, camera provideds main character/ elements in the scene with space so it can easily represent relationship between main feature that should be representive in the scene and surrounding elements.
2, Subject Height
As the title says above, it's basically the height of the camera to take, it's sometimes misundestood as the "height of the things to be taken" rather than "height of camera itself" , the visual impression can be changed depends on the height of the camera to take visual elements.
1, Eye-level angle
This is the aberage leevel of camera height that takes character from eye level of characters ti be taken or observer's position to see things as ormal position (standing position).
Nothing special in this height, but it's most fundamental idea for subject level.
2, Low-level angle
This is the method to take an object in the scene either from lower position or tilted upwards. This position makes character/element look much stronger or bigger and also provide higher impression.
3, High-angle level
Unlike Low-level angle, this subject height does opposite thing to the Low level angle, it takes the camera from heigher height or tilted downwards to record the subject.
This point of view makes character/element much weak, younger, small or childish.
To sum up the ideas about camera height, depends on the height of camera, the impression for given character/element can be changed, low-level angled camera can provide much stronger and big impression, on the other hand, high-level angled camera can provide much weaker and small impression.
Screen direction
The camera to record the scene can't be just standing still. Sometimes cameras to take scene must be moved to make the ovement or different impression for viewers. but we can't just move cameras around the object to take randomly. There are some rules we need to follow for screen direction.
1, Dynamic screen direction
This is the one of the important screen direction to make the moving scene of people or any vehicle more dynamic.
Method is simple, firstly, placing the camera in front of the objects that should be walking, then moving the camera around the moving object with going opposite direction of the object to take as the image shown below.
This camera movement makes the impression of moving object more dynamic and dramatic to see, however do not rotate camera over 180 degrees, this is because if the camera rotate over 180 degree, the direction of the object points opposite direction from the first direction, therefore we need to keep in mind that maintain the rtation of the camera within 180 degrees.2, Static Screen direction
Unlike the dynamic screen direstion, this scren direction is used for static screen. his method is able to estimate that used for conversation between two characters.
This screen method is also simple to understand, in the front of two different character you want to take, move the camera to take to emphasise two different characters as the diagram shown below.
As the diagram above show, this method also doesn't allow camera to rotate over 180 degrees around the line between two different characters. This is because in the screen, the every scene taken will become two dimentional, therefore we need to make the screen much easy to understand to watch what is going to happen now.If the camera rotate over 180 degrees, viewers are going to lose theire attention and become confuse becouse the screen gets distorted by changing characters position. We need to understand that we must maintain the position of the characters in the scene to avoid viewers get confusing.
After learning video shoot and angle, We've made a MV as a Group to understand about shoot and angles, We've made a MV for 30 second. At the first time, we misunderstand what we made so We have just made one simple MV taken in Medium wide shot in eye level (or low angle).
3, Summary
First of all, there are ifferent types of shoot depends on the distance between camera and object to be taken. Each different shot has different role and they are all different ability to express different impression. To explain simple, closer shot emphasise object/character's details, on the other hand, wide shot can express environment/background around main objects/characters to show.
4, My work
This is my work with Han lee to take movie walikng around Taylors. To state what went wrong and even better if, I think I understand the brief structure about different shot to take, I also worked quite well at amount of light in the scene to avoid too much dark or too much bright, on the other hand, I could make the video much more fluent and there are still some problem about lighting. Perhaps my next task to complete is managing the light...
This is the our video that we misunderstannd what to take.
