1, Introduction
For the final work of Sonic Design. We all have to the work of recording this video game sound from recording. Since the beginning of this module,
we've done various a
udio editing project
s so far from using
equalizer to make an
audiobook of story.
We all have to start from beginning of the recording audio for video we receive and create an good atomosphere for our final project. This is my final e-portfolio to make in this
Sonic Design Project.
2, Making a list of sound
From the beginning of the project, I already started the project from downloading the video to be used in this project. The project requirements are includes :
- Understanding any sound to be used.
- Adjusting any sound using Adobe Audition.
- Combining all sound into one audio with maintain cohesive with the original video.
- Record every progress into one e-portfolio.
This is the video called "Battleblock Theatre"(※Comedic platform game developed by The Behemoth and published by Microsoft Studios for Xbox 360, Windows, Mac, and Linux, released
on April 3, 2013.(From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)) that I am going to use in my project. I watched the video
and here is the list what I should include for my final product. :
- Sprint on wooden floor
- Jump
- Jump in the air
- Shinny sound like xylophone (a,b)
- Bigger footsteps
- Punching
- Kicking
- Hitting sound (a~c)
- Beat up(fainted)
- Throwing disc
- Beeping sound
- Little explosition
- High Jump
- Running on soft floor
- Warp
- Light metalic sound (Like Mario's coin)
- Door lock
- Curtain closure
- Stamping
- Tearing paper
After gathering all required sound and record some sound, here is what I've got. :
3, Process of making sound
After analysing the sound I needed, I started to working on creating every sound I needed. First of all, I started my work from planning what each of sound sound like? I need to identify the tone and impression for each sound effect for sure before I move to the creation.
Since The original video of video game for my project looks like child-friendly cartoon platform action game, I tried to make sounds like Sumar mario or Sonic the Hedgehog both of them surely for kids and their game's sounds are exactly what I tried to represent for my final work.
Additionally, I also tried to represent each sound "directly", which means every sound had to be something "understandable". Every sound for action must be clear and easy to describe what happens for each scnes and actions. They can't be just something ununderstandable, but I had to try what kind of things is represented from each scenes even from the action that actually has no sound at all in real life.
I mainly used my sketchbook and cooking bowl to create most of sound I used in my video. For example, when I tried to make a jumping sound, I tried to represent it by tappint watterbottle without lid like a drum. I adjust the sound by volume of water and strength of how I hit the bottle.
I also used the bowl as shown above. I add some water in the bowl and hit with spatula. I adjust the angle of the bowl itself while I hit the bowl to make a wield sound for warp with does not exist.
I sometimes use my body itself to create sounds too. I tried to hit my body (especially, my thighs and hands) with my hand and fist to create a hitting sound. It was hard for me to create a sound I need such a strange way, but it was truly worth in the end.
Some of the sound required my effort. To make an explosion sound, I have to use various tools to create a sound I need. First of all, I need to get a drum sound and I made my drum sound by making my own drum by wrapping Toilet paper roll by balloon, then I lowered the pitch to make it as if playing a big drum. I then shift to make a sound of next step of explosion by squishing plastic bag, plastic bottle and egg case. This work has became the second part of explosion after sudden loud noise of explosion sound. After that, I add the sound of dropping and shaking snack called "SoyuMi" in my small cooking bowl. I them assembled all of sound to make a good explosion sound.
I have done many attempt for this project (e.g, using toy car for surtain closure, recording U-residence door closure, tearing actual paper etc...), but try to assemple many sound to create an one sound was the most fun moment of this project.
After I create every sound I need (including recording instrument I played on my phone), I collect all of the sound and adjust timing for each of them and volume for it, I finally made a sound for given video game play video for my final project of Sonic Design

4, Suggection
After finishing my work. I showed my work to Mr. Razif, even thought the work progression itself has been evaluated well, he said there were some missing details in my works. Since my lack of observation, I missed some of the sound I need to record.
Here are the list of Mr. Razif's suggestion to include/improve for my work I made. :
Since I have other things to do for other modules, I can't do every works for my final project, I need to set limitation for work about what I can do at least.
Depends on the difficulty and assumption for creating a sound including editing. I only can make 2~3 sounds in maximum (I can't do any more sound to add.).
After some consideration, I decided to do these three works in the end of my work.
Here are the list of Mr. Razif's suggestion to include/improve for my work I made. :
- Lack of background noise
- The sound of achieving halfway point, I need something "going up"
- Hitting (Damaging sound) must have some high pitch sound
- Frisbee sound must have landing sound
- After getting gollden knitting ball, I need to add high pitch for footstep.
- The cound for collecting every jewel must have more sound for achievement

4.1, Background noise
The creation of the sound for this is going to be really simple (That's why I choose this first). I just start recording the sound in outside of this college and add some feature (if possible) to make an pitside noise.

4.2, Adaptation for Hitting (Damaging) sound
Mr. Razif's suggestion for this sound was like "For about hitting sound You need to add more high pitch note to exphasize the sound of damage", before I move to the process of making, I feel I have to listen example to have better understanding.
I went to the website of Koukaon Lab (効果音ラボ in Japanese) which contains a lot of sound that I also used so many time in my work. I found the sound of hitting and I need to analyse/summarise what I actually need for the work.
After some observation of the sound itself I found the additional sound I need to add for better Hitting (Damaging) sound. The sound I need was the first part of the sound as how I made an explosion sound. I have to add some high pitch short and hard sound before other sounds starts to play. The characteristics of the sound I need was something hard and high note and the it does not reverb of echo that it'd be like some music notes with staccato if this was a music to play with piano. Howevery I found some problem. The sound I need is like someting high object hitting hard surface for short moment, I can't reuse the sound of hitting my hand because it is too cloudy, therefore I need something different to make sure it fits right for the requirement.
It was so far for me to find out the required sound that is all about sharp and hard hitting sound that match my requirement, however While researching and analysing the sound to create a new sound by finding the most suitable sound from my own sound library, I found a new and surprising fact. Actually, there were more sounds required to create a new sound about punching and hitting.
The sound is actually formed by four different part. 1) Fast air-cutting sound, 2) low-pitched Condensed sound, 3) Big Drum-like sound, 4) Crushing sound. These are four different sound equally formed to create a nice sound of punch and hit. Then I needed to find out the most suitable sound that might be close to the sound I really needed. In the end, Throwing + Door lock + Explosion. This is the formula to create a much better hitting damage from all of recording I've done so far. I now find out the most suitable sounds from the sound library I made to get sound of Throwing, Door lock, and Explosion and add some adjustment by using pitch shifter to create a sound I need. I also adjust some of the sound by applying some more effect such as manual pitch shifter to make sure to lower the pitch while playing the sound and reverb and echo as original sound do.
In fact, To get a excact sound for punching and hitting, I have to get a sound about Big Drum-like sound and Crushing sound. To do this, I have to break down the explosion sound I made before to get the sounds I need. This is because as I said beofre, the sound of explosion was made by multiple combination of sounds. Drum sound, crushing plastic products and droping and shaking of snacks. I went to the sound file for each recording and get right sound I needed as Drum like sound and crushing sound. I used the drum-like sound from handmade drum and crushing sound from plastic bag. (I appologize that I forgot to take a screenshot to show what sounds I used to make a punching sound). Of course as I mentioned earlier, I used some effect tool to adjust each sound to lower the pitch and apply reverb and echo to make to punching sound close as possible
The process of maling the sound as I planned as process to analysing the characteristics of the sound from referecs and finding the exact/close sound I have recorded in last time, since I was asked to add a new sound after I get recorded and I edited the sound into the video I get, I have to time anymore to record new sound to make a new one, therefore I need to reuse the sounds I've already recorded to make a new one.

In the end, I've finally made the sound of punching and hitting as I expected. The process of making punching sound was way difficult that how I think before recording, since I have lack of ideas to make sound, I tried to use actual hitting sound of my hand, however that process wasn't enough to represent the sound I want to make to emphasize action in the sequence, therefore I have to analyse the sound in each different part to understand what I actually need to make a proper sound I need. In the end, I've got new skill about using the tool for pitching part of sound during the sound is playing though.

4.3, Frisbee landing sound
This is also one of the easy way to create, however when I tried to create a sound, it took longer time than I expected. First of all, I started to record the sound of dropping sketch book to the bed. After I recorded the sound, I used dynamics and amplify to adjust the sound. Through my edit in Adobe Audition. The sound impression shifted towards something metalic, therefore I tried to make much softer for impression.

5, Final Output
After adding more sound as suggestion and adaptation of sound, I finally completed my work for my final Sonic Design project. Here is my work. :
6, Summary
The progress must requires deep planning from aiming exact goal before move. Since this is the work that I have to start from making sound unlike the past works I've ever done, I need to identify what I am trying to achieve. The skills for observations and analysing are the primary skills for first pprocess for this project. I have to understand what I nned to have for the work I'm going to make. I then need to use skills to breaking down the specific characteristics of each sound I need and recreate them in my own. I need to listen carefully about the sound I've made to make the sounds I need.
Sometimes I need to construct multiple sound to build up the sound I need. Even though the example for this is just only making explosion sound, however I enjoyed this part most to build up the required sound from items surrounding to me to create something unique. The video called "How To Make Explosion Sounds" helped me a lot of idea for making an explosion sound and I used Gemini first to summarise the video content, then I used ChatGPT to summarise what I can do for making an explosion sound. As I already explained in previous chapter, I have to use multiple items to create an explosion sound, and I rearrange some of the suggestion in my own to create a sound.
In the end, I enjoyed the process of making sound and I've learnt the way to create a sound required with using my own creativity and sence of analyzng, however the skill of summarising all required items to record is still under the development. I need to obtain the skill to pay more attention to analyse what I actually need for all.
