Task 1 : Exercise 1 & 2

1, Lectures

Week 5 :

I was given new task about Text formatting, The text was about Helvatica and I completely forget because I missed to check Facebook page. I need to appologize about this point. To go back to the main topic. I was aiming two main topic.
・Don't lose readability at all, the main point of typography id readability.
・Try to represent Modern impression, In my opinion, Helvatica seems more modern impression than other font style.

(Fig 2.32 Format task prototype B)

(Fig 2.33 Format task prototype C)
To say my conclusion first, My three prototype waorks are failure, this is because they are bit difficult to read especially in A & B and Prototype C may be seem bit old.
In the result, I choose New Baskerville fionts for article and Title to make impression that this article is talking about odern font style

Week 6 :

This week, We have given a task about expressing 2 page typographycal text with provided text without using any visual elements using Adobe software.
It is similar to the previous task, Helvetica, but the difference is I need to used "Grid" and I need tol use all things we've learnt so far.

First, I had less idea how to use indesign, therefore this is my first work for week 6's task 2, but as you can see, my work is full of mess and unwatchable because I didn't use Grid in this Adobe indesign and I had less knowledge about text arrangement.
(Fig 2.34 First text design)

However, there is also good point I've learnt, In this design, I duplicate the title of "Visualise for a Better World" to create an impression for the given text so it looks like either having a shadow or three dimentional shape. However the purpose of typography is not about decoration, it's about expressing either certain emotions or specific messages, this is why I use different font for each line.
There is also one more reason for applying black coloured background, this is because I find out this is one of the most useful way to express emphasis in the typography, when I research about book typographical design, I found the work that uses different colou to emphasis text, this is why I tried to use different text background. This causes emphasize to the text where I want to make most impression.
(Fig 2.35 Front Text design prototype)

Therefore I started to recreate the typographical text from first. I started from using illustrator to create front page. I tried to use Golden spiral so viewers forcus to the word of "Better World" as center of the circle without any attention. I emphasis the text more by turning the text white and add black background behind the text of it. I think as the result, the message that the text "Visualize for a Better World" is more represented compared to the my previous work.
Secondly, I tried to make visual balance. First of all, visual balance is the design principle that is about stavilizing visual weight to make design stable to see, there are two different visual weight in design symmetricaly balanced (same visual elements) and asymetricaly balanced (balancing by making same visual weight). In this design task, I tried to use asymetrical balance which uses same visual weight shaped differently.
I was trying to create emphasis on the subtitle too by using golden spiral, so I tried to use circler shape and change text colour where it locates within the balck circle, howeverwhen I tried to change part of the text by applying shape above the each text, I realied that the boarder between black part and white part are bit distorted, this is big disadvantage because it makes hard to read text.
In the result, I tried to use different tone of Black and white for each shape so I can also represent the rhythm and movement too.
(Fig 2.36 Front Text design Final outcome)

You may see that I tried to use different font for each line of text, This is because I tried to represent "Visualise can create various expression".
(Fig 2.37 Second page design prototype)

Evrn though I could not apply any decolation to this text part, I tried to use golden spiral first to emphasis both text, but unfortunatelly, the text is longer than how long I expected and I was required size of text, as the result, the text may look weird.
I also tried to express unique design that can't be done by normal book and I tried to use visual principles such as balance, golden ratio, movement, repeation and so on... , but as the result, it looks unbalanced, I think it's priority to think about visual stability, therefore I needed to replace the position of the text.
After that, I tried to use typography method that increase each sentence's first character's size as other books do. As the result, the outlook of the text may be improved.

Additionally to mention, I inserted a quotes about design to make the design balanced, so in theresult, theimage is now complitelly stable to read now.

This is my final outcome.

2, Reflection

This is my first time to experience text design including sinple shapes and different fonts. I mainly focused about expressing the text meaning from given words. It was quite challenging task but I tried to express by refering images from pinterest and using design principles i've learnt from design principe to express the meaning and purpose of the given text.
I already tried to express the main topic of the text from my frst work, however, I realized that I also need to maintain visual stability to design my work much better, so I tried to use design principle to improve my works. As the result, my typographic work has beed improved much better.
There are also I need to improve more, the right hand side page isn't designed enough in my mind, I think It could be improved so much than final outcome. When I look through pinterest, there are tons of good designs for books, for example :
・Writing important phrase vertically.
・Creating different shape by using text.
・Make emphasis by making different groups of texts.
My next task for typography is to find good text design style to create emphasis from texts.

3, Reading

I have read the book called "Typography Referenced"

In this book, there are tons of great modern typographic designs included as shown below. Each of them are explained well by short explanation about history of each font style.

it also includes short explanations about history of typography before modern days.

The book also includes informations about other typographies wnd they are usefull to kearn about design and it also includes ideas about good tyographic works and even it also includes principles about typographic design such as unity and harmony.

To sum up the ideas about this book, this book is full of typographic ideas and it can be very useful for designing new text design. I can use this book for next upcoming project as reference.
