2, Ideas

First of all, the given project for us is about desiging the location you choose with applying design principles we have learnt before, such as the principles shown below.

    ・Balance

    ・Emphasis

    ・Repetition

    ・Movement

    ・Harmony

    ・Unity

    ・Symbol

    ・Word

Similar to the topics of selp portraits that captures the also requires to express meaning not just the outlook of the self, we also need to express any ideas for each location.
I have designed three different location, Tokyo Kuala Lumpur anfd New York. Tokyo is the place I used to live, Kuala Lumpur is the plaace I am currently living now, and finally The New York is the place I'm lasting to go to.

3, Visual Research

My attitude for creating a new design in the Taylor's university is always "creating with the topics I've leanr before". this may be seemed too simple, but in the production, it becomes bit difficult because it's very important to understand each design principle's ideas well...

I also used art style as reference to get inspired for new design idea. I started from the theme what I want to express, then I googled about the art style that can express my design idea, then I understand each design idea for reference for my work.

1, Symbol (simplify the idea)

This is the idea f the design to express main meaning of the visual elements with losing details as much as posible. This idea is called "Pictorial symbols" or "Abstract symbols". 

As the diagram (This image is came from  https://hideback.tumblr.com/post/95683468705/cicada-stages-of-conventionalization-hugo) shows, the image of fly is still understandable as it goes down with losing its meaning, there ason for this is because it remains the main part of the fly which express main part of the fly

I also referred to this kind of image which simplify the image by reducing the numbers of colours used. Even there are less numbers of colours, it still expressing the image very well. I used these kind of ideas to try to reduce details as much as possible with remaining the ideas about my works.

2, Words

Basically, word is the group of the characters that explains the way to say and forms particular meaning when thay are formed with collect order. The word isoriginally simplified form of images as shown below.

Each characters in the words are also using their own design principle to express its own meaning. This idea is used in every languages around the world. The idea to epress meaning by using words isn't used only in text, but we sometimes make images by using words like building a blocks as shown below.

I used the idea to express the image by using the words meaning about the image itself.

3, Impressionism

This is the art style founded in France in nineteenth century. The concept about this art style is about expressing the light reflection of the nature as it as rather than expressing the whole outlook of image itself.

I used this artstyle to express the idea about change of light by both time and movement of the object itself. 

Basically the vision we normally see in our life is reflection of the light from light source and reflected by objects surrounding us. The poingt I forused about is that I tried to emphasis the light reflection more colourful and strong to produce more strong impression for the light in the mage.

4, My visual ideas

I have created three (without including alternative ideas) artworks about the places I have chosen about I've been before, I'm currently living in and I lusting to go to using the design ideas I have mentioned just now (symbols, words, and impressionism). I'll explain my works with my progress to understand my visual ideas.

1, Tokyo

First of all, I represented the location I used to live in. The visual principle I used was "symbol" to try to simplify the visual of my hometown without losing impression of it. I used Adobe Illustrator to create group of simple shapes to make simplified (symbolic) image of Tokyo.

First, I tried to express Tokyo by creating the symbol image as shown above which is formed by circle and rectagles representing buildings and simple triangle and rectangle representing Tokyo tower.

The problem was the image of Tokyo tower is too simple and hard to determine as Tokyo tower itself, however, I like this idea to express the symbol of Tokyo because of the contrast between red colour and blue colour. This idea bacame my principle to express Tokyo.

After designing the prototype of symbol of Tokyo, I tried to express Tokyo sky tree to design alternative idea expressing Tokyo. The problem I found in this design was the impression was weaker than how I expected before designing he work, I guess this is because the contrast between blue and grey isn;t strong enough as contrast between red and blue, therefore I decided to use Tokyo tower as my final outcome.

I also found the lesson from the work I made. When I produce symbol of Tokyo sky tree, I tried to make more realistic image of Tokyo sky tree, I realised that it's acceptable to create more realistic image for symbol.

Finally, I recreated the symbol of Tokyo tower as shown below. The point was recreate the image into more realistic way to provide better impression.

2, Kuala Lumpur

In this work, I used the design principle "words" to express the place I am living now. The method I used was like I use the words to create a image like building a block.

The first problem for this work is the way to represent the Kuala Lumpur, then I decided to express "Twin tower" by using word and simple shapes that decorates my design.

Before I started to design my work. I planned how should I represent the Kuala lumpur with words, the I realized to use different language used in the Malaysia. In Malaysia, there are three different race existed, Malay, Chinese and Indian, and there are four different languages are used, Malaysian, Chinese (Mandarine), Hindi and English, so I decided to use four different languages to represent Twin tower. Every characters have a same meaning, "Malaysia".

My original work was just like shown above, as you may notice, it looks very weird, and unbalanced, so I adjust the size of each character to try to look stable.

The second design was way better than previous work, The point I changed was the shape of the top "M" and  the distance between two separating chinese character. The Shape of "M" was the part I struggle most because even I still felt weird on the shape of "M", I had several ideas to rearrange the shape of "M", however, I am very happy to make a better deaign of "M" now.

After rearrange the shape and placement of each characters, I added a shapes to looks more like a real twin tower.

3, New York

My last work ends up with the place I want to go. In the original ideas abouy t this final work, I also had different plans about designing New york in different way or different location, for example designing grand central station, of merging the photograph of myself with image from google map, however both thechnical issue and image problem (I could not find any suitable image that can be used to merge with the photograph of myself both firsticked in the light is from Google map and image).

I used the timelapse image as shown above to express the change of light in the because of my image of America image, even though I have never been to America, I think America is somewhere else that contains many lively events and full of excitements exits in there. There must be tons of different races and people trying to express their own life for whole day. this is why I chose America and express whole day in one picture.

The point I mostly foucus was about colour. rather than expressing the light in nore vivid colour. The reason for this is because I wanted to express America as one of the Place in the Earth where culture is being created lively. I wanted to create the place I want to go looks so exciting for me, therefore I choose impressionism artstyle to looks the America's place "times square" so exciting for me. 

My epression to express whole day as one picture starts from the sky, in the painting, I used every colour in the sky from early morning to late evening. as the results, The sky in my painting represents whole time from orning to evening. I also arrange the place to put every colour, I but darker blue colours to the place where I though the darkness of the night come and orange for where  hough it came from, it also used in the lighter blue.

I tried to represent whole the city landscape by using watercolour paint work so it can easily represents the fast change of the landscape, Iby trying to paint the change of the light and colour of the landscape cause dramatic change of view of the Times Squae more efficiently, I also tried to express change of the screen by applying every frame I could see and combine together so it can easily represents fast change of the screen.

Finally, I represents fast change of car's and people's travelling as group of lines going towards vanishing point of the picture from edge of the image.

Especially, I painted the lines of light over the simple image of cars so it easily explain that they are fast travelling of cars. I used the design principle of "movement" in this picture.

To sum up the ideas about this artwork. It expressing the Amerika's Times Square where the many cultures are born and people spends theire life lively by using vivid colours , impressioninsm style and design prnciple "light".

5, Feedback from Lecturer

Unfortunalatelly, I have completed one work whihc is about simple symbols about Tokyo as shown above, which is the symbol design representing tokyo tower much simpler design.

When I showed this to the Dr Yip Jinchi. She told me that the artwork was OK, but I need to show the references about this work, therefore I researched abut simplified works as references.

6, My final outcomer

Unfortunatelly, The work I showed to Dy Yop Jinchi was only the artworl about symbol of the Tokyo, therefire This is only my final outcome.

By adding details on the Tokyo tower more, we can emphasize moeon the Tokyo tower. The suggection that Dr Yiop Jinchi was nothing, therefore I found the point I should inprove more by myself and it results improving my work much better way.

Th e problem I had in this artwork is there are lee emphasise because there's no details on the Tokyo tower,, therefore by adding details on the image (symbol) of tokyo tower, the emphasis for the Tokyo tower becomes much better than before.

7, My reflection

To sum up he the production so far. I can firstly state that I should not be rushed to develop artworks before visual research. I need to have enough image references.

To state about good point first, it was good idea to reduce any details as much as possible to make a symbol of the image you want to express, however, the part I can reduce detail can be changed depends on what you want to express in the image. The image you want to emphasize must not reduce its details for better impression.

The bad point is I could come up more alternative ideas for each visual ideas, this is because I only made 2 ideas for my representation for Tokyo, I could come up with various ideas to make even much better idea possibly. In nect time I should have much more time to think more ideas to produce.
