This week, We're going to lean about the any design to introduce the scene more dramatic and attractive. The story itself can't ba mede just actors and the scenes, we have to consider all surrounding features to develop scenes for the film. In this section, we're going to have "Mise En Scene" to develop ideas about visual expression on screen.
2, mise En Scene
What is Mise En Scene? It is french words to describe about features to decorate screen that we normally see in the movie. It can provide visual effect on the movie and depends on the object/feature that you place in the scene, the impression you feel in the movgie is going to change.
Composition
This is the section about the frames that camera take and it also consider about the angles and the distance between camera and subject.
There are many different types of distance and angles for camera (https://aratamabuchi.blogspot.com/2022/09/video-angle-and-shoot.html), therefore, you must consider to plan carefully about composition in the each scenes.
Basically, Lower camera angle provides bigger and stronger impression, on the other hand, Higher camera angle provides provides subject weaker and smaller impression, this is the example of different impression provided by angle of camera.
In the topic of shoot, the wider shoot can show the environment surrounding around the character, on the other hand, closer shoot can express details of subject/character on screen. You must carefully think about the shoot to take for each scene to express different expression.
Set Design
As the title says, this is the topics for Mise En Scene about the "everything the audience sees within a particular scene", to explain in different words, it's the elements or object that is used in the each scenes in the movie. It includes the elements in the movie and environment design surrounding th characters (actors).
These elements and details can help audience to understand about the world of the location in the movie and add background in the story.
Lighting
The colour can provide simpe expression for audience. The strength of light also provides the expression of the scenes too. High ley lighting can be used in the musicals and romantic comedies, but low key lighting can be used in horror movies.
You can refer the light impression from real life, you may feel scare in the dark area in the midnight and you may feel excite in the colourfull right disco.
You just understad the usage of brightness and colour as Strong light can express happier feelings but darker light can produce horror and serious impression.
Costume and Props
These factor isn't just for expressing what they are wearing or what they have in the movie. It can be also one of the representive way to express the details of character.
Costume can be used to show a character's thoughts and personalities. The costume of characters can tell us about each character's age, sex and economic/social stance (Costumes, 7 Reasons Why Costumes Are Important In Film ,https://costumescostumescostumes.com/7-reasons-why-costumes-are-important-in-film/). The design of character's costume itself can also represent the world settings in the movie. It is an one of the important idea to express background either past or future, realistic or fictional. You must use the outlook of clothe itself to express the story.
It can be said same things on Props, every people in real life must have something for their life, the outlook of each elements can also be representive to express the background of story and social stance of each characters. Its material (wood, plastic, or metal) and its outlook (vivid, dull, colourfull, black and white, clean or dirty...) can also be representive the characteristic and character's favourite, economic states, behaviour, and so on.
Depth of Space
Unlike the shoot which is distance between subject and camera, it's about distance between objects, people and society in the scene. It can be influenced by their placement along with camera location and lens to be used. The point is that by arranging placement of subject can be explain character's relationship or social statement of subject. If one character in the scene is placed far from other group of characters, it can represent "isolation" of the chatacter, on the other hand, if the character standing closer to the group, it can also representive to show that the character is main core of the group (society). As the example shows, the distance itself can be representive.
To sum up the ideas so far, the creator tried to represent the background of story itself, characters and world of the story by visual expression to avoid explaining by text or phrases. Every creator must think the idea visually and there are different way to express ideas.
